Main Task: Equipment Used
03:58 |
With my written work done and some of my sketches created and finished, I then began to take some photos for my magazine.
To make my magazine look and feel realistic, I used equipment such as:
The Canon Eos 400D camera with 10.1 megapixels and an aspect ratio of 3:2 was one of first time I used a industry recommended camera.
This camera was assisted by the use of a Bowens Gemini Esprit GM 500 Flash. This piece of equipment synchronizes with the camera so that when I take a picture the added flash from this equipment will enhance any lighting effects I desire to achieve
I also used a Bowen’s radio trigger, which was attached to the camera which help synchronize the camera with Bowens Gemini Esprit GM500 Flash allow to add lighting effects to photographs I was about to take.
Also used in the photo shoot was a 60cm soft box. This was basically used to add a softer tone to lighting of the photographs, so that when take the photos wont be to dark to appear on the screen
Finally in the photo shoot a Photographic Light Reflector Disc was used to reflect light onto the main object at any angle to in my opinion connote and imply a hidden message left by the photographer/editor of a magazine
Main Task: Case Study of a publishing house
03:23 |
The publishing house I have chosen to analyse and examine is Conde Nast publications. Founded in 1907 by Conde Montrose Nast, Conde Nast has been owned by Advance Publications since 1959. Conde Nast are recognized as being the first company to use the magazine strategy of emphasizing that a magazine be focused on a particular class or interest, otherwise known as a lifestyle magazine. Conde Nast publishes magazines from a range of different genres such as famous fashion and lifestyle magazines like Vogue and Glamour to less famous technology magazines such as Wired and Web monkey. It’s clear to me that from this information, Conde Nast publications was founded and recognized as a fashion publication and therefore will strongly emphasize most of its expertise and advertising on its fashion and lifestyle magazines. Conde Nast Publications has a total circulation of 156 million issues a year with a estimated readership of 65 million.
Conde Nast appeals mostly to most target audiences due to the range of magazine genres it publishes.
For instance its technology magazines such as Wired and Web monkey are targeted mostly at young males with a keen interest in web design and technology, while its fashion and lifestyle are targeted at women and a small minority of men who follow and keep up with modern and vintage fashions.
By publishing so many different genres targeted at many different audiences, it quickly makes a substantial amount of profit and easily recuperates finances to keep producing and publishing magazines. Its no wonder that Samuel Irving Newhouse Junior, the chairman of Advance publications is worth an estimated 4 billon dollars, making him the 132 richest person in the United States Of America.
Conde Nast publishes famous titles such as:
Vogue- Vogue is a fashion and Lifestyle magazine that is published in 18 national and 1 regional. Vogue magazine is renowned for being a magazine that every month addresses a topic of fashion, life and design. It also operates on website: http://www.vogue.com/ . Targeted mostly at females and a small minority of men with a keen interest in fashion and fashion design
Teen Vogue- Just like Vogue, Teen Vogue is a fashion and lifestyle magazine but is targeted at teenage girls. The magazine also features more serious topics such as teen pregnancy.
Person used in front cover is Vanessa Hudgens, Actor whose films/ TV shows are aimed mostly at female teenagers
Glamour- Glamour magazine formally known as Glamour of Hollywood is a woman magazine which targets women aged between 18 and 49. It has a subscription audience of 1,411,061readers in the United States of America.
Golf Digest- Golf Digest is a sport magazine targeted at mostly men but also women who enjoy golf and play the sport regularly. Initially owned by the Times, it was sold to Conde Nast publications in 2001. It generally publishes topics about recreational golf and competitive men and women golf .
Bon appétit- Bon appétit is a food magazine which describes itself as a ‘food and entertaining magazine’. Named after the French phrase ‘Enjoy your meal’ its target mostly at people who enjoy food and its elegance
Vanity Fair- Vanity Fair is a cultural magazine named after a famous magazine called Vanity fair which ceased publication in 1935. The modern day version covers topics based around pop, culture, fashion and politics. Vanity fair is also known for its controversial photographs and front covers which are iconic and have a social impact which is inflicted today.
An example of controversy photography employed by vanity fair. The picture is of a then seven month pregnant Demi Moore which at the time sparked controversy but now has left a long social impact. Since the magazine was published, many celebrities have taken pictures such as this and pregnancy photos have now been regarded fashionable and trendy depending on who you are.

Utimately for my coursewok product, i have decided to use idea 4 as my contents page layout
Main Task: Draft Front Cover Layouts
01:38 |
With the written aspect of my coursework finished i promptly began making sketches about my ideal front cover.
Inatially i have chosen to use idea 2 for my front cover layout because i feel the masthead used in this idea is very catchy and i feel it will draw many target readers because of the way the front cover is layed out and because of the photgraph used in the idea
Main Task: Audience Research
00:31 |
As stated in a earlier blog extract, i did not use the tradtional questionnaire format to ask people about there musical preferences, instead i had conversations on electronic formats such as Blackberry Messenger.
Here are some more examples of a conversation i had in detail with someone about music and whether they actually read magazines anymore and also there feelings and opinons on the music industry.
Main Task: Audience research questionnaire
00:24 |
Unlike my college magazine task, i did not create an questionnaire. Instead I took heed of what my media teacher told me and just had normal conversations with people about music and how they usually obtain new music and also if they feel music magazine are becoming outdated. Below is an example of a conversation i had with someone using Blackberry Messenger.
Main Task: Profiling My Audience Part 2
00:33 |
This is a mood board which contains items which i feel my target audience will be fond of. Rappers such as The Game because not only are the kind of musicians i would feature in my magazine but also because they are the type of rapper i think my target audience would prefer than others. Each rapper in this moodboard in my opnion tells a story and leaves a message in there lyrics. As i stated in my first audience profile, things such as technology preferneces would not be important, what was important was that they knew how to operate at least one of the technological products.
