Magazine name: Reverb.
Denotation: The Magazine Front Page is an photograph of an young caucasian male looking bamboozled with his two separate fingers up. The two fingers look as if they creating a electric shock which connotes that the magazine is vibrant and entertaining. The Bright colours used in the magazine front cover create an impression that the magazine will appeal mostly to the younger generations ( i.e teenagers). Also in the photo the male’s eyes look dismayed which connotes that he may be confused by power sourced from his two fingers. He is in the front of a black background. The magazine seems to made for both male and female even though there is only a male figure on the front page.
Anchorage: All text on the magazine front cover is not serif font which conotes the lack of formality or the relaxed apporach the editor of the magazine may have inisted on. Text on the magazine is mostly in a mixture of blue and white- two colours miles apart on the colour wavelength, which could connote the unusuality of magazine and its intended target audience. Text in some aspect seems to create an impression of being airbrushed which could connote a theme of rebellion from the magazine editor point of view.
Masthead: The masthead of this magazine is in an big bold font, which connotes the confidence or lack of it on the magazine editors behalf. The large masthead also attracts the reader to the unusuality of the magazine and the lack of formality. The word ‘Reverb’ is very informal and it purpose is very ambigious.
Coverline: Just like the masthead in this magazine, the main coverline is in an big bold font. Also the text is in bright, contrasting colours which gives an impression of the editors artistic side. The term used: ‘put the shock in rock’ connotes a sense of wildness and informailty.
Puff: The puff is ‘Free electryfying posters’. The puff is effectivley used to bribe the reader in some sense to buy the magazine because its free and because the editor cleverly leaves the reader unsure about how the posters will even look .
Strapline: the strapline like the puff cleverly leaves the reader in suspense because the reader for example is unsure of the results of the chart for the album list. Also the ambiguty of strapline leaves the reader eager to read more. ‘All new reviews’ cleverly subconciously urges the reader to purchase the magazine in order to know what the magazine is talking about.
Colours: The colours on the magazine front cover are very bright and connote a sense of vibrance on the editiors behalf. They are also quite modern colours which connote a sense of youthfulness and energy. They connote a sense of youthfulness because the colours are bright and very unusual for a college magazine because in some sense it seems that the
Magazine Target Audience: The magazine target audience seems to be targeted at people of college age. This is revealed through the colourful magazine layout, the language used and the dentotation of the main photograph.
The magazine front cover seems to reveal that the common ethos of the college where the magazine is published is that the students are very independent and are encouraged to nuture there talents to the fullest that they can possibly reach.
Dateline: the date the magazine was published in febuary 12 2010. It gaves the reader an indication that the magazine is rarely recent and new. However the ‘new reviews ‘ sounds slightly outdated because of the present time and date we are in .
Nvc: On the front cover, the males physical posture is uptight which could connote his rebelious and stuborn attitude on life in general. The two fingers up in the magazine front cover could connote that he feels independent and free frrom soicieties laws.
